Hibs trip to Ross County is 'biggest match of the season', claims ex-Easter Road winger

Mickey Weir, who had two spells with the Capital club during his career, believes three points in Dingwall is vital for Jack Ross and his side in the race for third place.

The match is Hibs’ game-in-hand over nearest challengers Aberdeen, and could play a big part in deciding the Scottish Premiership table come the end of the season.

“This is the biggest game of the season for Hibs,” Weir told the Evening News. “If Hibs can go up there and win, it will give them that edge and hopefully spark a wee run for them.

"It is massive. There is still a lot of football to be played but a result on Saturday would go a long way to helping them get third.”

Hibs have been fortunate that Aberdeen have twice failed to take advantage when the Easter Road side has dropped points, losing to Celtic and only manging a goalless draw with Hamilton Accies when Motherwell and St Johnstone posted victories over the men in green and white.

But with long-serving Pittodrie boss Derek McInnes and No.2 Tony Docherty now departed, and an interim management team of Paul Sheerin, Barry Robson, and Neil Simpson in charge, Weir is wary of a reinvigorated Dons side mounting an eleventh-hour charge for that coveted third spot.

"It would be an absolute disaster if Hibs threw it away now after putting themselves in such a good position,” he warned.

"A lot of the players haven’t been in a situation where they’re grasping for Europe and my worry is whether there is enough experience in the team to get them over the line.

“A couple of good results will make a difference – if they win the game in hand this weekend that’s a six-point gap, and that would be a huge boost, especially playing Livingston the week after.

"The longer it goes on, however, the more difficult it will become. If they don’t manage a result against Ross County, that trip to Livingston will be even tougher.”
