Calderwood slams derby performance

Hearts’ 2-0 victory left the Easter Road side propping up the SPL table with just one win from their first five matches of the season while the Gorgie club stretched their unbeaten derby run to eight matches to leave Calderwood without a victory in four of them.

Goals in either half from Ryan Stevenson and Andy Webster left Calderwood with no complaints about the final result but he admitted he was angry at his own team’s performance and conceded the lack of points – just three gained so far – was a concern.

Accepting Hearts had dominated the second half, Calderwood said: “They got a head of steam up, had chances before they scored the second goal which came from a set play.

“If you do not do your job you are going to get punished. I thought we were weak, we looked weak and we were weak. We did not produce anything in the second half that would lead us to think we could keep a blank sheet.

“Unless we find a backbone and a defence then we are going to struggle.”

He added: “We looked as if we were a team short of match fitness and they looked like a team, because they got the lead, which was able to control the game. They played really well in the second half and we did not.”

Calderwood, though, was annoyed that again his side had, in his eyes, “gifted” Hearts their opener at a time when the match remained in the balance.
