Michael Weir: Hibs should always be aiming for Europe

Qualifying for continental competition should be the minimum goal for Hibs, says Michael Weir

It was good to see Martin Boyle and Drey Wright coming out and saying Hibs should be aiming for third or fourth place in the Scottish Premiership.

Time will tell with the squad this season but in my opinion, Hibs should always be looking to get into European competition. That should be the absolute minimum for a club of this size.

A lot depends on the squad - the team is going to need time to gel together. You can never tell how a team is going to perform across a season, especially with new faces in it because you never know how they're going to settle.

The circumstances, with no fans in the stadiums, could play a part as well. It will be difficult, but I'm sure the players will eventually get used to it.

With the current squad, I certainly think the ability is there for Hibs to have a good season. They've got the players, they've strengthened key positions.

I think the most important thing is finding some sort of consistency as soon as they possibly can.

Last year, I thought the team was far too inconsistent, especially to begin with when they were losing late goals.

The team did look good at times, and they quite often started games well enough, but too often things would crumble and they just seemed to fall away in some matches.

I think that on their day, Hibs are capable of beating, or at least matching, most teams in the Scottish Premiership, but last season the consistency level just wasn't there.

Hopefully the team can gel quickly, and start the campaign strongly. The new boys have been in for a few weeks now and that will help.

There's no doubt that the club has the players and the talent to do well. They just need to make sure that they can deliver, and deliver consistently, as that's been their biggest stumbling block over the last couple of seasons in my opinion.

I do think that if the team can find that consistency early doors this season, then there's no reason at all why they can't reach those European spots.
