The first pictures have emerged of the Hibs squad being put through their paces in pre-season training at the club’s East Mains complex. As well as the usual familiar faces, including striker Florian Kamberi, there are a number of youngsters involved with the first team pool.

Here’s a brief rundown of the new additions…

Still just 15 years old, Murray Johnson has been training alongside fellow goalkeepers Ofir Marciano and Kevin Dabrowski. He has been capped three times by Scotland at Under-16 level, making his debut in a 2-1 friendly defeat to England on 25 October last year.

He then kept a clean sheet in a 4-0 win over the Republic of Ireland and played in a 1-1 draw with Wales in two Victory Shield matches.

Kevin Dabrowski – goalkeeper

Standing 6ft 5in tall, the flamboyant Pole needs little introduction to Hibs fans. The 22-year-old cuts an imposing figure between the sticks and look to have progressed to being the club’s back-up goalkeeper following the departure of Adam Bogdan earlier this summer. Performed well for Cowdenbeath during a loan spell last year, picking up the man of the match award in a Betfred Cup match against Hearts at Central Park and recording five shut-outs in 12 League Two matches. Capped by Poland at Under-17 and Under-18 level.

Josh Doig – defender

The 18-year-old made a big impression during a loan spell at Queen’s Park in the second half of the curtailed 2019/20 season. Fans and management alike raved about the teenager’s ability, with Spiders boss Ray McKinnon telling the Evening News: “He was absolutely unbelievable for us, outstanding. His athleticism… he was up and down, he was brilliant and everybody was making comparisons with Andy Robertson. The kid was phenomenal, he has everything. He's quick, aggressive, athletic, with a great delivery and we were over the moon with him. We thought he was fantastic."

Doig featured against Dunfermline Athletic and Newcastle United in last summer’s pre-season friendly programme and has caught the eye in training and development squad matches. Able to play at left-back or centre-back, he recently signed an extended deal tying him to the Capital club until 2023.

The flame-haired full-back spent last season on loan at Lowland League side Civil Service Strollers, often playing as a left wing-back for Gary Jardine’s outfit although he regularly operates on the left of a back four for the Hibs development squad after rising through the club’s academy.

Comfortable in defence and supporting the attack, the 18-year-old – dubbed Scholesy by his team-mates – has been tipped for greatness by his coaches. Has an eye for a pass and is a tenacious tackler.

Innes Murray – midfielder

The former Celtic youngster has become a mainstay of the club’s development squad in the middle of the park, and has impressed in loan spells at Stenhousemuir and Airdrieonians – playing under former Hibs captain Ian Murray at the Diamonds earlier this year. With Hibs light on central midfielders following the departures of Vykintas Slivka, Greg Docherty, and Stephane Omeonga, the 22-year-old could have a bigger part to play this season.

Ben Stirling – defender / midfielder

A good old-fashioned utility player, 21-year-old Stirling is capable of operating at centre-back, right-back, or in midfield. Has had four loan spells in the last four years with Berwick Rangers, Cowdenbeath, Arbroath and most recently Alloa Athletic where he registered an assist on his debut in a 3-2 win at Queen of the South. Was primarily used in defence by Wasps boss Peter Grant but his versatility will stand him in good stead ahead of the new campaign.

Ryan Shanley – forward

The 19-year-old attacker, who can operate as a No.9 or as a wide forward, has previously trained with the first team and there are high hopes for him at East Mains.

Impressed during a loan spell with Civil Service Strollers in the first half of last season to the extent he made the step up to League One with Forfar Athletic before the coronavirus pandemic cut the campaign short. Signed a new deal with the Easter Road side in January, and the club’s hierarchy are hopeful the teenager can make an impact on the first team “in the not-too-distant future”.
