Dundee boss James McPake has spoken about on-loan Hibs defender Sean Mackie as he confirmed the player would be remaining at Dens Park until the end of the 2019/20 season.

Mackie, who can operate at left-back or in left-midfield, has played 13 times for Dundee, scoring once in a 3-0 win at Alloa in October.

McPake, a former Easter Road captain, told the Evening Telegraph that he was delighted with the workrate and attitude from the 21-year-old.

"We've been delighted with him, with his attitude and willingness to come to a different club and perform. He's trying to get to a level where he is in the Hibs team week in, week out.

"His attitude and desire to work could be seen in the last derby [1-1 draw with Dundee in December] but we've seen that from day one.

“He’s young and will be inconsistent at times but recently he’s been really good - he was excellent in the win at Partick.

“He gives balance to the side and he’s a good player. We need that out of him every week and I think we are starting to get that.

“When he gets a run of games and starts believing in himself he’s got the chance to be a really good player."

However, despite the Capital club handing Jamie Gullan a chance to impress and force his way into Jack Ross' first-team plans following a successful half-season loan spell at Raith Rovers, there are no plans to recall Mackie from his stint in the Championship - even if they are satisfied with how the loan is progressing.

"We've spoken to Hibs and they are happy he is getting games," McPake continued. "Both clubs are happy and Sean will be here until the end of the season."
