After a lively first half-hour with little in the way of clear-cut chances, Buddies ‘keeper Jak Alnwick was sent off for taking out Martin Boyle as he attempted to deal with a poor backpass and Hibs came out fired up in the second half with substitute Ryan Porteous powering a header beyond replacement ‘keeper Dean Lyness for the opener from Boyle’s corner.

The winger then netted himself from the penalty spot after Jamie Murphy had been brought down by Marcus Fraser. Jon Obika pulled one back to set up a nervy ending to the game but Hibs held on for the three points, building on their victory against Dundee United at the weekend.

The Easter Road side welcome the Dons to Leith on Saturday for what could be a huge game in terms of determining the outcome of the Scottish Premiership table.

Hibs are two points clear of the Pittodrie side having played a game more but three points at the weekend would be a huge boost in the battle for third place and European football.

Jon Scott tweeted: "Great three points, keep the momentum going for a big game at the weekend."

Dean Osborn added: "Job done, points in the bag."

Mikey Gordon joked: "We never make it easy. Great win."

Sean Malone pleaded: "Can someone tell the team we’re playing away on Saturday - might have a chance of winning!"

Glen Adams was chuffed: "Huge 3 points. We had to work for it tonight but a bit of quality from Murphy to win the pen and Boyle with a goal and an assist. Good to see him back at his best. Let's take this momentum into Saturday against Aberdeen."

Lawrie Simpson added: "Scrappy win but it will do."

Keith Robertson had a dig at Hearts: "See, that's how you deal with Obika and St Mirren..."

Christopher Bell wrote: "Crazy how we won whilst “lacking ambition” and Aberdeen got beat while making a “real intent” to finish third."

John Joseph Friary added: "Excellent win! Aberdeen next and a real chance to get into that third spot!"
