Sparky's off and running

Marc McNulty's 2020 is so far shaping up similarly to his 2019. He joined Hibs on loan on 31 January in both 2019 and 2020, and, following two substitute outings at the start of both of his stints at Easter Road, he has now marked his first start in both spells by scoring a goal in a Scottish Cup fifth-round victory against lower-league opposition on 9 February. On this date last year, McNulty netted once in a 3-1 home win over Raith Rovers. It was the first of nine goals he scored in a purple patch at the end of last season. The striker will be hoping this hat-trick against BSC - his first goals since October - prove the catalyst for another fruitful stint with Hibs.

Doc's orders

While McNulty got the headlines, Greg Docherty's contribution was similarly significant to Hibs' victory. The on-loan Rangers midfielder, making his first start for the Easter Road side, was involved in all four goals. For the opener, he fed Martin Boyle wide on the right before setting up McNulty directly for his second and third goals of the day. Docherty then got himself into a good position to knock in the fourth goal himself. It capped a strong, energetic performance from the 23-year-old following an eye-catching 45-minute debut as a substitute against St Mirren. The midfielder looks like he could prove to be a useful January addition by Jack Ross.

Not all plain sailing

Although Hibs ended up with a 4-1 victory, this wasn't as straightforward an assignment as the scoreline suggests. Hibs started with only one natural centre-back - Paul Hanlon - and two full-backs in their back three, but the Easter Road side came under more pressure than they envisaged and had to revert to a more orthodox four at the back after the break. For the half-hour or so in which the game was poised at 2-1, BSC put up an admirable fight and had a couple of chances to get themselves level. The horrible conditions - which seemed to get worse as the game wore on - did little to aid Hibs' cause as it certainly acted as something of a leveller. In the end, however, the Premiership side achieved their objective with a bit to spare.
