Aaron Somerville proves his worth for Penicuik with late winner at Broxburn

Penicuik Athletic are up to fifth place in the East of Scotland League Premier Division after Aaron Somerville’s

last-gasp winner snatched a 2-1 victory at Broxburn Athletic.

It was the hosts, however, who edged in front seven minutes into the second half at Albyn Park when Craig Scott’s 30-yard free-kick nestled into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal.

The Midlothian-based outfit grabbed a deserved equaliser 15 minutes later, former Spartans player Craig Stevenson’s wind-assisted corner flying into the net.

And 32-year-old Somerville, who has found himself out of the team recently, was on hand to stab home the winner with little more than a few minutes to spare.

Penicuik boss Kevin Milne was thrilled with the response of his players after going a goal down, none more so than for matchwinner Somerville.

“He’s been training really well and he’s worked hard to get into the team. He was unlucky a few weeks ago but he’s come into the team and he’s showed his worth so I’m delighted for Summy,” Milne said.

“To win the game is brilliant. I thought we were really unlucky to go one down as we’d had three or four really good chances to go ahead and it never quite came for us.

“Their goal was a really

good free-kick but I still thought we could get something out of the game so we persevered, made a couple of changes and we were relentless in the final third and got our rewards for it.

“Even after we equalised, I always felt there was another goal coming and we looked like the team that wanted to go and win the game. I thought we controlled the second half from start to finish and moved the ball well in different parts of the pitch and we could have scored a lot more.

“If we want to challenge for the league then these are the games we need to win and beat the teams in and around us. Every game is important.”
