Sandys post stunning cup comeback

Sandys became the second LEAFA outfit to reach the quarter-finals of the Kelme Scottish Amateur Cup after a stunning late comeback saw them edge past Braehead 5-4 in a fifth round replay.

With Tollcross Thistle safely through at the first time of asking last week after their 3-1 win at Menzieshill AFC, Sandys had to it all to do it again after their 1-1 draw away from home.

The visitors were first to strike first when their striker latched onto a long ball and finished well. Sandys soon levelled when Stephen Manson cut the ball back for Bob McKenzie to net.

Braehead got their noses in front right on the stroke of half-time, and Sandys fell further behind when the hosts made it 3-1 from the penalty spot moments later.

Sandys looked down and out, but a change in personnel and system revitalised them as Kev Stewart reduced the deficit before a penalty of their own squared the tie.

From then on it looked like there would only be one winner, but with ten minutes remaining Braehead regained the lead.

Sandys would have to summon up something special to do anything now - and they did. Stewart dragged them level for a third time with a header before Wayne McIntosh sparked scenes of jubilation with his effort with minutes to spare.

Sandys face a trip to Ayrshire to take on Shortlees in the last eight, while Tollcross are also on the road. They will play East Kilbride Y.M. AFC after the YM saw off Gartcosh United in the fifth round.

Coleman strikes twice as Star eliminate Meadowbank

Lothian West outfit Edinburgh Star knocked out Premier Division Meadowbank to secure their spot in the semi-final of the the Challenge Cup where they will face Mill AFC after a 2-1 victory.

Both sides found it difficult to play anything resembling football in horrendous windy conditions. Meadowbank would take the lead after 15 minutes from a corner-kick, with Star ending the half on top but still behind.

Striker Scott Coleman netted twice after the interval after a change in formation paid dividends. The hosts were also helped by Meadowbank losing their goalkeeper to injury with an outfield player having to step in.

Cavalry Park post vital win

Cavalry Park pulled level with Dunbar Athletic in second spot of the Edinburgh East league after a 2-0 victory.

Cavalry keeper Andy Mackay produced a terrific save to prevent Dunbar from taking the lead after ten minutes.

Cameron MacFarlane opened the scoring from the penalty spot after he was brought down in the area following an impressive run, before Gary Nicholson’s strike with time running out sealed an important win.
