Juniors: Star continue to rise in the East

Newtongrange Star maintained their superb start to the 2013/14 season with a deserved win at Carnoustie on Saturday.

A minute’s silence was observed before the game in memory of Penicuik Athletic physio Jeff Gray, and Star began in confident style despite missing the firepower of Sean Jamieson and Paul Tansey, both away on international duty with the Junior Scotland side.

A Gary Cherrie cross was nodded down by Craig O’Reilly for Chris King to fire over in the eighth minute, and the visitors continued to control the early stages without creating any clear-cut chances. Carnoustie’s Webster was booked for dissent in the 20th minute and fired a free kick just wide shortly afterwards. Some fine build up play between King and Cherrie released Jordan Cropley in the 23rd minute but MacPherson rushed out to block the midfielder’s effort.

The visitors took the lead in the 30th minute when a long free kick was glanced on by O’Reilly for Blair Tolmie to slip the ball home from 10 yards and make it 1-0.
