The 20-year-old, recently released by Championship leaders Rangers, has agreed a contract with David Hopkin’s side until the end of the season and is expected to go straight into the matchday squad for Saturday’s trip to face his former employers at Ibrox.

Halkett’s versatility across the back will provide competition for first-team regulars Morgyn Neill, Declan Gallagher, Ben Gordon and Jackson Longridge.

The player has been capped by Scotland Under-19s and spent a month out on loan earlier this season at League Two outfit Berwick Rangers.

During the current transfer window, Hopkin has already brought in midfielder Mark Fotheringhasm and goalkeeper Marc McCallum, while Sam Stanton has joined on loan from Hibs. However, defender Ross Millen has left in search of regular first-team football while Hugo Faria has signed for League One side Airdrie.

Livi are now just four points ahead of bottom club Alloa, who narrowed the gap with a 1-0 victory over play-off hopefuls Raith Rovers at Stark’s Park on Tuesday night.
