Cuikie were only inches away from scoring an opening goal in the first minute when a shot by Lewis Barr flashed narrowly past the Rose post.

Immediately afterwards, home goalkeeper Billy Bald and centre-back David Liddell combined to block Blair Batchelor’s shot for a corner kick.

Then, in the 14th minute with Penicuik pressing hard, Aaron Somerville turned quickly in the box only to see his effort go wide of the goal.

Four minutes later, a Tommy Coyne shot-cum-cross was turned into the Penicuik net by Kelbie, but was ruled offside.

Then Bald pulled off an excellent save from a long-range strike. Linlithgow started to apply pressure on the Penicuik defence and a free kick on the edge of the right side of the penalty area was glanced away for a corner. From the corner, Shirra saw his lob dip over the crossbar.

At the other end, Keith Lough had a chance but blasted the ball high and wide of the target.

On the half-hour, a Neil Janczyk corner beat everyone but bounced off the top of the crossbar.

Minutes later, a fine run by Lough ended with a strike that curled over the bar.

Linlithgow upped the pace in the second half and had the ball in the net within 35 seconds, but Batchelor was ruled offside.

On the hour, with Penicuik’s goal under siege, Strickland had the ball in the net, but was again ruled offside. But the visitors finally took the lead in the 73rd minute when McLennan’s cross picked out Kelvie who slammed the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

Penicuik refused to give up and Somerville headed home what appeared to be the equaliser, but was ruled offside.
