Michael Weir: Hibs shouldn't have to rely on other teams

We had second place in our hands just a couple of months ago, but we’ve caused our own problems since then and now we’ll just have to take whatever hand we’re dealt when it comes to the 
play-offs.

The inconsistency we’ve shown lately is baffling. We seem to have no problem getting up for the big games, then fall flat in the league games against teams we should be beating.

In terms of going for second, we can at least take heart from the fact that Falkirk also look to be finding it hard. They finish with a game against a Morton side who we know are very hard to beat, so there’s still some hope that we could pip them.

To do that, though, we’ll have to win our games against Dumbarton and Queen of the South. They are both very winnable on paper, but we’ve simply not applied ourselves properly in games like those over the past two months and that’s why we find ourselves in a desperate scrap for second.

Even though Cappielow is one of the toughest venues in the league, I genuinely expected us to win there after our victory over Rangers, but yet again we were unable to get ourselves going. If we don’t get second, though, it won’t be Saturday’s result that cost us – it will be that horrible run through March and early April where we lost our way badly.

The game against Rangers showed that we’re still a very capable side. I though Alan Stubbs got it tactically spot on by playing 3-5-2 and it certainly bodes well for the high-stakes games we’ve got coming up that we can still come through big matches like the Scottish Cup 
semi-final against Dundee United and then the game on 
Wednesday.

I’ve got no worries whatsoever about us being equipped to handle the cup final. I’m more concerned about whether or not we can show the required consistency to deal with the pressure of the play-offs.
