It was third versus fourth top of the Super League meeting at Whitton Park in Broughty Ferry as an unchanged Penicuik side looked to leapfrog their hosts in the table.

After a minute’s silence for the Dundee boxer Mike Towell, who passed away on Friday, Penicuik kicked off and both sides had half chances early on.

With 10 minutes gone Broughty’s McLellan picked up from Blair’s pass in the Penicuik penalty box but shot high over the bar and two minutes later it was ex-junior international keeper Ross who kept Penicuik at bay with an excellent save from Keith Lough’s volley.

Both sides were playing open attacking football and play swung from end to end but clear chances were few and far between.

With 20 minutes on the clock Lough blazed over followed by a riposte from the home side as a surging run by Clark was cleared for a fruitless corner.

Five minutes later an interchange between ex-Tayport pair Cavanagh and Adam saw keeper Bald dive at Adams’ feet to save. At the other end Wayne Sproule saw his effort from 25 yards deflected.

With two minutes to half time McCord fired high and wide from 18 yards.

With 52 minutes on the clock referee Leslie awarded a goal kick, then took the advice of his assistants to give a corner; McCord’s effort found Winter unmarked on the edge of the box and he rifled a half-volley past Bald to give the home side the 1-0 lead.

Penicuik responded and McCallum headed over, but Broughty attempted to turn the screw at the other end and strong defending by the visitors saw two shots blocked in quick succession.

On the hour mark it
was Ross who denied Daryl Young an equaliser with an excellent save and again three minutes later he denied McCallum.

Penicuik were searching for an equaliser but the home side were equally sharp on the break and as McCallum and Aaron Somerville set up Sproule he failed to trouble Ross.

Penicuik were still creating chances as they sought an equaliser and the game swung into a remarkable six minutes of injury time but the visitors were unable create a further scoring opportunity.
