South Gyle ace grabs a double to seal fine fightback

The Edinburgh West outfit will now face a home tie against Dunalba FC on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals.

Mayfield gained a tenth-minute lead when Douglas Morrison converted from the penalty spot after a South Gyle player handled in the penalty area, but the home side were back on level terms before the interval through Nick Perry’s clinical finish.

Perry then notched the winner as he latched on to Dean Cunningham’s long throw-in and lobbed the Mayfield No. 1 to send his side through to the last eight.

South Gyle coach Robert Marshall said: “It was one of our best performances of the season and Mayfield are a very good side who haven’t lost a league game so far. This is our first season as a team and we’ve picked up a few good results to show where we should be. Dunalba won’t be an easy game but I definitely think we’ve got a good chance.”

Mayfield & Easthouses coach Eddie Carbery was less than pleased with his side’s display after their exit from the cup.

He said: “It was 1-1 at half-time and we were doing alright, but we gave away a silly goal and just didn’t perform. I think we could be victims of our own success because we’re still involved in four cups and playing catch-up in the league, but hopefully we can win the league and get promoted this year.

“We’ve now reached the stage where we will be playing Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays, so it’s a big ask.”

West Lothian ease through

WEST LOTHIAN are through to the semi-finals of the  Anderson Cup after recording a comfortable 3-0 triumph over Salters Athletic at Forrester High School.

Scott Robertson struck the solitary goal of the opening 45 minutes when he sent his shot into the top corner after a cross from the left.

Andrew Wood then pounced on a poor kick-out from the Salters goalkeeper to coolly lob the ball into the back of the net from 30 yards and put West Lothian 2-0 ahead.

Graham Hamilton sealed the victory with a third as he was on hand to turn the ball in from close range after receiving a cut-back from the left wing.

West Lothian coach Peter Flannigan is now looking forward to his side’s semi-final in which they will face  Silverknowes Vale, Inverleith or Heriot-Watt.

Flannigan said: “The last two months we have brought in quite a few new players so it’s a completely different side to what we had earlier in the  season.

“The guys are really starting to gel now and are looking good. Whoever we get it will be a hard tie as it’s a semi-final, so you don’t get easy games, but we’re looking forward to it.”

It’s seven-up  for students

EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY thrashed Melville Rovers 7-0 in a one-sided Miller Cup quarter-final tie at Peffermill.

The Premier Division 1 side showed their superiority throughout as the visitors struggled to make much of an impact.

A hat-trick by star man Charlie Hunter and further strikes by Finn Daniels-Yeoman, Ross Robertson, Will Rowett and Charlie Thomson overpowered their Edinburgh West opponents, who have only recorded one victory in the league all season. Edinburgh University will now face Tollcross, Uphall Station or West Lothian in their bid for cup glory, while Melville will look to avoid finishing  bottom of Edinburgh West  division.

Clubs are reminded that there is a council meeting on Thursday, April 4 at Meggetland Sports Complex starting at 7pm. All clubs should be  represented.
