Whitehill boss set to freshen things up against Spartans

Whitehill Welfare host Spartans for the second time in seven days tonight, with home boss Steven Hislop admitting he may use the Lowland League fixture to further assess his squad as he continues the process of building for next season.

The sides are due to meet for a third time in the South Challenge Cup semi-final in the coming weeks as well.

“I would think both teams might look to freshen it up,” said Hislop. “Spartans have got a League Cup match on Saturday and I need to see guys in different positions and give other boys an opportunity. But, if we’re going into the game there’s no point in not going in to win it.

“That would just keep the confidence and would be good going in to the third game, hopefully at one game all.”

Hislop hopes to make it two in a row after overseeing his first home win since taking over at Ferguson Park, beating Glasgow University 3-2 on Saturday.

“You could see the boys had a bit more confidence,” he said.

“It’s not been a great season for them – they’re the first to admit that so it was good.

“They showed a bit of character to come back and win when I think a couple of weeks ago if that had happened, they’d probably have gone on to lose the game.

“Fair play to them. It’s good to get a wee win in a cup game – that’s what we’ve got to aim for now.”
