It was a positive start for the home side and, on 16 minutes, the Gala defence failed to clear a corner and Callum Connolly reacted quickest to open the scoring.

Just before the half hour, it was 2-0 when a sweeping Welfare move teed up Dean Knight and, after his shot was blocked, Tony Muir’s deflected effort sneaked over the line.

The visitors’ task was made all the harder when Jamie Gibson was red-carded just after the restart.

With 15 minutes remaining, Connor McGregor crossed from the right and substitute Jamie Devlin finished high into the net to finish the game as a contest.

In the closing minutes, John Williams had a chance to make it four for Whitehill but missed a penalty.
