Get your kicks at Scottish Taekwondo Championships at Meadowbank

Meadowbank is bracing itself for a feast of the very best in Taekwondo as the Scottish Championships gets underway this weekend.

The two-day event, beginning today, is expected to welcome around 500 athletes to the Capital with gold-medal hopefuls arriving from around the UK as well as Denmark and Switzerland.

Taekwondo is one the fastest growing sports in Scotland and has again be boosted by Team GB’s performance at last month’s Olympics Games in Rio where 2012 Olympic champion Jade Jones retained her 57kg title, Bianca Walkden won bronze in the 67kg+ category and Lutalo Muhammad took silver in the men’s 80kg.

Scotland is well represented with 11-year-old British Cadet champion Natasha Wilson from Stenhousemuir one to keep an eye out for.

Event Director, Grand Master David Bailey, from Falkirk, says the competition promises to be a cracker.

“Two years ago we staged the sixth Commonwealth Championships here at Meadowbank and it was an outstanding success,” he said. “The enthusiastic and professional team we put together to deliver that event has been working on these championships for months and we’re looking forward to a superb feast of Taekwondo.”

Taekwondo Scotland chairman Master Martin Hold added: “We’re especially delighted to welcome athletes from around Europe and we’ll ensure they receive a warm and friendly welcome here in the Capital.”

The action begins at 9.30am today and again tomorrow with tickets available at Meadowbank.
