The 19-year-old Heriot’s spinner has come on leaps and bounds in recent months and opened the bowling in the warm-up defeat to Oman on Friday.

In that match he took 3-22 and his skipper Preston Mommsen believes that he can do a job, if selected, in the Group B encounter with Afghanistan in Nagpur tomorrow (2.00pm GMT). “Mark has shown that he enjoys pressure and copes well under it. He proved that a few weeks ago against the Netherlands when he took five wickets and again on Friday against Oman,” Mommsen said.

“We are all just buzzing to get the tournament started now and show people what we can do.”

Fellow spinner Con de Lange also believes Watt can have a good event and said: “He is learning all of the time and he has huge promise for such a young guy.”

Yesterday’s final warm-up match against the Netherlands in Mohali was abandoned due to rain with the Dutch on 133-3.

After the Afghanistan match Scotland play Zimbabwe on Thursday and then Hong Kong on Saturday with the group winners progressing to the Super 10 phase.
