Hockey: Inverleith in the groove against Grove

INVERLEITH underlined their current position indoors in Scottish hockey when they eclipsed reigning domestic champions Grove Menzieshill yesterday to win the Dundee side’s own invitational tournament.

The Edinburgh club, who edged the Tayside team 4-3 at Perth pre-Christmas in the last indoor league game before the festive shutdown, won more comfortably this time at the Dundee International Sports Centre (DISC).

The 6-3 victory by the Capital combine, who were indoor champions in 2011, also earned revenge for a 5-4 defeat by Grove on Saturday in the round-robin qualifiers in the two-day event.

Edinburgh-born Great Britain squad player Chris Grassick and Scottish international Derek Salmond both netted doubles in the final.

Ross Jamieson, who plays outdoors for Edinburgh University, and experienced player Chris Bird, who is making his comeback after injury, also netted in the confidence-boosting win.

In the women’s event, league leaders Dundee Wanderers thrashed Aberdeen-based Granite City 15-0 but then lost 5-3 to Grove in the women’s final.
