Hockey: Moodie to the four as Uni claim place in semi-finals

The students, who are fifth in Division One, beat plucky Division Two outfit MJV Dundee Wanderers 6-2 at Peffermill.

Elsewhere, Grange – winners two seasons ago – demolished PSL Team Sport Clydesdale 11-0 at Fettes.

Grove Menzieshill thrashed Granite City Wanderers 8-1 in Aberdeen.

Meanwhile, in Saturday’s league action, Division One leaders Grange had to come from behind to beat Edinburgh University 4-2.

The students shocked the home side by going ahead after two minutes when Jock Henderson took advantage of slackness in the Grange rearguard to stab the ball home from close range. Joe Waterston levelled six minutes later when Edinburgh’s defence was slow to clear the ball.

The score remained level at the break but then Grange upped a gear and went ahead through skipper Cammy Fraser after 14 minutes, his shot being deflected home over University goalkeeper David Forrester.

And ten minutes later the game was over when the students turned the ball over on half-way. Riddell raced in on goal and rounded Forrester before being taken out. Callum Milne stepped forward to convert the penalty flick for 3-1 and John McCluskey made it 4-1 four minutes later.

The students hit back through a penalty corner strike from midfielder Gordon Amour with six minutes remaining and they then laid siege on Grange but could not convert.

The victory puts Grange on 19 points, one ahead of champions Bromac Kelburne after seven games, while Edinburgh University slip to fifth in the ten-strong table.

Elsewhere, Watsonians’ slide continued when they were beaten 4-2 at struggling Western Wildcats to record their fourth straight defeat and slip to sixth place after leading the table after three games.

In the women’s league, champions Edinburgh Universoty thrashed second-bottom Hillhead 8-0 to remain five points adrift in the title chase behind Milne Craig Clydesdale Western and Grove Menzieshill, who both have 18 points.

Bottom club CALA Edinburgh lost 10-0 at Western Wildcats and Watsonians edged Erskine Stewart’s Melville 3-2.
