Hockey: Two victories for ‘sloppy’ Inverleith

INVERLEITH playcaller Stuart Neave today expressed pleasure at the club’s six-point start to the Division One title chase, but admitted: “We’ve still got things to work on.”

The Edinburgh side opened with a 12-1 win over Clydesdale and a 7-3 success over Western at Perth on Saturday.

Inverleith marksman Phil Hall top scored against Clydesdale with five goals, while Derek Salmond claimed four and Adam Mackenzie two.

Fife-born Mackenzie netted three and Salmond a double in the win over Western and Neave said: “We were sloppy against Clydesdale and against Western they sat in and fed-off our mistakes, of which there were too many.”

Defending champions Grove Menzieshill beat Western 9-1 and then thrashed Clydesdale 21-1 to lead the table after the first weekend of competition.

They have goal difference of plus 28.

Kelburne, the champions outdoors, also earned full points with back-to-back wins over Dundee Wanderers (6-5) and Grange (8-3).

Grange, fielding a young side, beat newly-promoted Harris 6-2 but lost 8-3 to outdoor champions Kelburne in the
final game of the day.
