There is still due to be some sport this weekend, with Murrayfield Racers' match against Dundee Tigers on Sunday scheduled to go ahead.

However, with major sporting fixtures up and down the land being postponed indefinitely to contain the spread of coronavirus, Racers director of hockey Tony Hand admitted Sunday could be the club's last game of the season.

“We’re waiting on official instructions from the Scottish Ice Hockey Association, but as far as we’re concerned right now, the game against Dundee Tigers is going ahead, and if this does turn out to be our final game of the season we want to make sure we give everyone a good send off," said Hand.

"It changes by the day, but it looks like the government are allowing these fixtures to go ahead up until Monday.”

Tomorrow’s game completes Racers’ Scottish National League regular season fixtures, but the club’s Scottish Cup final match against Paisley Pirates and play-off campaign beginning with a quarter=final tie with Aberdeen Lynx are now extremely unlikely to go ahead.

The Elite League, the top level of ice hockey in the UK, has already announced the remainder of the season is to be cancelled and the league which relies heavily on foreign talent are already sending their players home.

Murrayfield and other Scottish National League teams are made up entirely of local players and in theory games could be played at a later date should conditions allow, however Hand refused to comment, adding only: “I don’t know, I would be speculating and I don’t want to go down that route. We’re conscious things can change radically at any time, but I don’t want to say any more than that.

“Tomorrow could possibly be our last game of the season depending on the SIHA or the government making that decision, but safety of our fans, players and staff are always our number-one priority as a club.

“Any further updates will be on our social media pages before anywhere else, one thing we’re good at it’s keeping our fans abreast of things, this will be no different, we’ll be right on the ball.”
