Kings beat holders to set up Cup clash with Troon

Edinburgh Kings defeated holders St Mirren 86-63 in their second-round Scottish Basketball Cup tie at Portobello High School last night and are now through to meet Troon Tornadoes away in the quarter-finals at the end of next month.

Saints, beaten at home by Kings in the league last week, put up a worthy defence of their trophy and, helped by 14 points from guard Colin Railley, were just 22-24 down after the first quarter.

The second quarter was also tight and Kings were 7-0 down when they went on an 8-0 run which Ed Rekis closed out with a running two-pointer with a second left to make it 37-36 at half-time.

Ahead 60-54 after the third in which Pete Lyons did a great job helping out the big players, Kings coach Doug Reilly brought back Paddy Campbell and Craig Reilly whose defensive pressure sparked a 14-0 run which killed off the game.
