Lasswade athlete Guy Learmonth is perhaps Midlothian’s best hope for a medal in Glasgow, with the 800 metre runner hitting top form at the right time.
Learmonth (22), currently holds the Scottish and UK Junior and U23 records at his distance and stunned the world when he beat Jeremiah Mutai and Andy Osagie in the indoor 600 metres race at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena in January. With the rising star busy training hard for the Commonwealth Games, his coach Henry Gray told the Advertiser how delighted he was with Learmonth’s progress.
He said: “I think if he runs like he did when he beat Mutai and Osagie in Glasgow at the start of the year then he has a real chance.
“That was a world class performance. He went to number one in the world for 600 metres with that performance.
“Not only did he win the race but he beat the Scottish record that had stood for 40 years. He beat it by 1.8 seconds, which is unbelievable.
