Maclean has high hopes for Scotland

Former GB internationalist and Scotland captain Iain Maclean has agreed to take on the vacant post of Scotland senior men’s basketball team coach for next year’s European Championship for Small Nations.

A former holder of the post – he was in charge when Scotland hosted the tournament in 2008 at the Edinburgh University Pleasance Sports Centre, where they won the bronze medals – Maclean, a former captain and coach with MIM Livingston and the Edinburgh Rocks (before they moved to Glasgow), also represented Scotland in the tournament, then called the European C Championships.

The Bull played in San Marino in 1996 when Scotland finished fifth and in Malta in 2002 when coach Toni Szifris steered them to their second successive bronze.

Third is the best Scotland have achieved in this tournament, and Maclean, currently coach to Scottish League side Glasgow Storm, has clearly been motivated to have another attempt: “Why can’t we win Euro C? It would be nice to set the goal and give it a good shot.”

Stirling Knights coach Peter Duncan and former Scottish under-23 coach Ben O’Connell will be his assistants.
