McCallum faces tough field

A FIELD worthy of a national cycling championship will line up for the elite event in tomorrow’s Gifford Road Races, hosted by Edinburgh Road Club.

Scottish title holder James McCallum (Rapha Condor-JLT) will face a clutch of international riders in the 65-mile contest, which starts at 1pm in Gifford. The event also incorporates the East of Scotland Championship.

Among his rivals are Evan Oliphant (Team Raleigh), Gary Hand and his Herbalife-Leisure Lakes Bikes.com team-mate Alex Coutts, and Davie Lines (MG-Maxifuel Pro Cycling), plus a host of top performers from around Scotland and England. The main event is preceded by a 40-mile support race that has also drawn a large entry. However, a calendar clash means that only four female riders will go to the start.

Most of the country’s leading women are in action at the Perth Women’s Grand Prix, which is the opening round of the British Cycling Road Race Series. The event gets underway tomorrow morning with a 50-mile stage at Forteviot, followed by a one-mile time trial in Forgandenny in the evening, and concludes with a circuit race around Perth on Sunday.

Lothians rider Anne Ewing features in a powerful squad from the Breast Cancer Care Team, while youngsters Katie Archibald (City of Edinburgh RC) and Louise Borthwick 
(Edinburgh RC) will be keen to make an impression on the 
56-strong field.
