McGregor defeats his rival McCutcheon to Scottish title

Meadowbank's Lee McGregor won his first Scottish Championships 56kg senior title on Saturday night with an unanimous victory over Ryan McCutcheon of Lochend.

The 19-year-old former British youth champion was simply too good for McCutcheon at Ravenscraig Sports Complex, his opponent now having lost three consecutive finals since winning the title in 2013.

McGregor also won the Richard Thomas Memorial trophy after being named the best boxer of the tournament, a new accolade in honour of Boxing Scotland’s former chairman who died last month.

“I dedicate my whole life to this sport and I’m so glad all my hard work is paying off,” McGregor said.” I’ll be back in the gym today preparing to fight for my country in a couple of weeks’ time.”

In the opening bout of the evening, Livingston’s Adam Saleta defeated David Sim by a split decision. McGregor’s club-mate Sean Spence lost to Greenock’s Robbie McKechnie in their 64kg contest but James Nelson (81kg) of Lochend prevailed over Kevin Kane by a unanimous decision.

There was, however, disappointment for Matthew McHale (52kg) of Lochend who lost to 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Reece McFadden.

Meanwhile, Livingston’s Elaine Greenan (64kg) beat Megan Reid on a split decision.
