Beeslack school captain Paul Smith (16) was one of two young bowlers from Midlothian picked to represent Scotland in the Under 17s international in Belfast against Ireland on July 18.
Paul made the final squad of 24 which also included Midlothian’s Ellie Borthwick. Half the team selected went to Ireland and the other half will go to Wales on August 7.
It was a super day at the Old Bleach Bowling club just outside Belfast which saw Scotland come home with a 22-8 win.
Paul, who works part-time helping children with additional support needs, was also the Midlothian winner of the singles competition and competed at the Scottish Young Bowlers Association (SYBA) National finals in Northfield Ayr on July 22.
The teenager will captain the junior county team when they compete against Edinburgh and East Lothian for the regional qualifier for the Andy Houston Cup.
Paul, who is a member of Shottstown Bowling Club Penicuik and Midlothian Young Bowlers Association, has been bowling from the age of seven and has a very successful string of trophies to his credit.
Last year he received the club’s player of the year for the second time and won several club competitions along with getting to the national finals as a part of a triple in 2017.
He is also on course to achieve the Queen’s Badge with the Boys Brigade.
