Hawick Linden 3
Linden kicked off the season with a friendly at home to Haddington whose sizeable squad, with a warm-up game already under their belts against Dunbar, looked much sharper.
Although the score suggested a one-sided affair, Linden competed well for periods of the match against a visiting outfit who were big and mobile in the forwards, while their backs were quick and used the ball well.
The game consisted of four 20-minute periods and the visitors led 12-3 after the first through two tries, one of which was converted, with Kirk Ford landing a penalty for the Royal Blues.
In the second period, Linden were much more in the game. Graham Colville charged down a kick and looked sure to score but just couldn’t gather the ball. Linden’s backs were then on the attack but an interception saw Haddington score in the corner. Two more tries by the visitors, both converted, stretched their lead to 31-3.
Into the third period and Linden were still competing well. Colville had another great run but he couldn’t release the final pass yards from the line. Haddington then scored two uncontested tries in thecorner through their winger and full-back to make the score 41-3.
To Linden’s credit, they restricted Haddington to only one converted try in the final period, scored by their middle row after intense pressure by their forwards.
