Lasswade 15, Dumfries 40
Dumfries came fourth in Premier 3 last season, winning 12 of their 22 fixtures, so this was always going to be a clearer test of life at this level.
Almost all of the first quarter hour was played deep in the visitors’ half and when they infringed at a scrum on their own five-metre, Ainsley, the enterprising home scrum half tapped and darted over but the conversion sliced wide.
Lasswade regained possession from the restart, when Gray was stopped 10 metres out, Gladstone was on hand to kick and chase into the corner.
An exchange of penalties within the second quarter offered what turned out to be false promise of an even contest. On the half hour, Dumfries broke up a Lasswade attack. The long clearance was fumbled and winger Henderson hacked and chased to the posts for Tom Hiddleston to make it 15-8.
