The second half of the Edinburgh & Lothians Table Tennis League got underway after the festive season with all five of Penicuik’s teams in action.
The performance of the week came from Penicuik 4 who faced a tricky away match against West Lothian 7 who sat two points ahead of the Midlothian side in second place in Division 3. Having lost 7-3 at Ladywood in the first fixture of the season, the fourth team knew they would have to play well to prevent the hosts from building a four-point lead at the top of the division. Tony Brentnall, Krzysztof Laszkiewicz and Gavin Hunter made the trip to Bathgate and got off to a flying start, winning the first five matches to ensure at least a draw. With four of the remaining five matches going the way of West Lothian, what looked like being an easy victory turned into a nervy match. It was left to Krzysztof to win his final match of the night to secure the all-important victory. Krzysztof was Penicuik’s player of the night winning all three of his singes matches, Tony won two and Gavin one as the fourth team recorded an excellent 6-4 win. The victory leaves the fourth team in a three way tie for second place in the division.
There were further wins for Penicuik in Division 2 of the League. The second team were looking to continue their push for promotion as they travelled to face Police Scotland. With an injury to regular player Brian Bailey, Clive Liddiard had to call on the services of two players to form the third team as Abby and James Wighton came into the side. As it turned out James was player of the night winning all three of his singles matches and combining with Clive for a win in the doubles. Clive won two and Abby won one as the second team ran out comfortable 7-3 winners.
