Newtongrange middleweight Stephen Tiffney is looking forward to a bright future after realising his dream of becoming a professional boxer.
The 26 year old, who won the Scottish amateur middleweight title in April, has signed with MGM Scotland Promotions and will fight his first professional bout on September 5, on the undercard of rising star Stephen Simmons’ fight at Meadowbank.
He said: “It’s good to finally become a professional boxer.
“It has been a lot of hard work. When you start the sport it’s what you want to be doing. As a boxer I have been training for 15 years so it has all been for this moment.
“MGM do lots in Marbella and Ireland. It’s picking up here too. So it’s quite exciting, and it’s only going to get bigger. They have the right backing and they have some great boxers.”
The Lochend Club boxer is happy he will make his pro debut close to home, against an as yet unnamed opponent.
He said: “My first fight is at the beginning of September at Meadowbank, which is great as it’s pretty much a home fight for me, instead of having to travel far for it. People who know me in Newtongrange and from my club can come along to support me.
“It will be a big night, I imaging it will sell out quite quickly.”
Stephen hopes that being a professional fighter will help him secure more sponsors and is hoping local businesses will get involved.
He said: “If people are interested in sponsoring me, then get in touch.
“I knew turning professional would create more interest, so it’s just about waiting for something to happen.
“It’s all about advertising their business on T-shirts, shorts. There will be a lot of people at my first fight. So it’s great exposure for any local companies out there.”
