Dalkeith/Penicuik U-16 29, Portobello U-16 12
The joint Dalkeith/Penicuik (DP) U-16 team welcomed Portobello to King’s Park on Sunday, hoping to consign the previous week’s heavy league loss to memory.
DP started scrappily and the usually reliable pack struggled to win any ball at the set piece or control even their own ball.
From one piece of pressure, the ball spilled out on the Portobello side and their speedy wing-forward burst into the 22 and over the line for the opening score.
A DP move from midfield involving a great dummy by the onrushing fullback, then had McMillan outstripping the defence and DP were on the board, 5-7.
Only some poor midfield handling and scrambling home defence stopped the visitors making greater inroads, but the relentless pressure finally led to another score as Porty went under the posts for a 5-12 lead.
DP’s forwards finally secured some possession and James McQueen and McMillan did a great job of drawing the defence and sending Smith over for the score, 10-12 at the half.
Dalkeith began the second half brightly and McQueen finished a trademark mazy run with a run in for the lead 15-12. A penalty for DP was taken on well by McGuff to make it 22-12.
DP now looked in total control and after McMillan and Flynn again flayed the visitors’ defence, a loose ball was kicked by a Portie player straight to McMillan who went over again for the final score, 29-12.
