The 21-year-old Napier student upgraded his bronze medal from Tallinn last March with a convincing 8-4 victory over US skip Kory Dropkin, who had beaten Mouat 7-6 last Monday before losing 7-5 to the Scot in Saturday’s 1v2 play-off.

Mouat avoided another close finish in the final as he dominated from the outset, leading 2-0 and 4-1 and never allowing Dropkin to launch a fightback.

Bruce Mouat, world champion – that sounds pretty cool!” he smiled. “I’ve been curling for years now, and all that hard work comes out in a final like that. I can’t thank my team-mates (Angus Dowell, Bobby Lammie, Gregor Cannon and alternate Robin Brydone) and support team enough.

“I feel a lot more relaxed than I expected. Saturday was an emotional rollercoaster, but I was quite chilled today. We controlled things from the start, and that helped how I felt.

Dropkin generously added: “Bruce shot the lights out today.”

Mouat has a chance to make it double gold next month when he and clubmate Gina Aitken represent Scotland at the World Mixed Doubles Championship in Karlstad, Sweden.
