Edinburgh Monarchs have expressed “great disappointment” following the cancellation of the 2020 speedway season due to coronavirus.

The decision was taken by British Speedway following the announcement made by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson last Friday which stated October as the target date for crowds to return to sporting stadia, which does not give enough time for a full season of senior racing to be staged.

The additional possibility of localised lockdowns and the challenges involved in bringing internationally based riders into the country have proved too great a risk and the governing body will now focus efforts on a full return in 2021.

The ‘What The Fork' Monarchs promotion had been driving efforts to bring senior league racing to Armadale Stadium this year, but with that now off the cards, they remain hopeful of staging open and junior level racing when possible.

Club chairman Alex Harkess said: “From the outset we have endeavoured to do everything within our power for Edinburgh to run senior league speedway at Armadale Stadium this season.

"Unfortunately that power is not in our hands as both the British and Scottish Governments continue to prevent spectators enjoying professional sport in stadiums.

"This is a big disappointment to the club and will be a big disappointment to all involved be that supporters, riders and everyone but we must respect that the Government guidelines are in place for the health and safety of all and we endorse this fully.

"We thank everyone for their patience during what has been a drawn out and, at times, frustrating period. We will continue to explore what may be possible in terms of other forms of speedway competition pending changes to the Government advice.

"What I can say with certainty is that we are amassing our energy for a league return in 2021 that is even better for everyone to enjoy."

British Speedway will continue work on the grassroots level of the sport and clubs have been invited to gain the necessary permission from their local council to stage some form of racing before the end of October.

Rob Godfrey, chairman of British Speedway Promoters Ltd, said: “We would like to offer our sincere appreciation for the supportive attitude shown to us from our broadcast partners Eurosport, they have been very understanding of this most difficult situation for the sport.

“Promoters up and down the country have worked 24/7 to try and give themselves every opportunity to stage league racing this season and I take my hat off to all those who have shown a positive attitude throughout.

“We have never given up and it is only the announcement from the Prime Minister on Friday that has left us with no choice.

“It is also important for us to thank all the riders who have remained patient throughout all of this, they have been left in an extremely difficult situation and our thoughts are with them all.

“In addition, the loyal sponsors throughout the country must also be acknowledged , their support is much appreciated by clubs.

"And we must also thank all supporters of this wonderful sport in this country. We must now embrace the future and look forward with a positive attitude as we look to grow British Speedway.”
