Historic Penicuik Cricket Club is open for all

Traditionally cricket has not been a sport associated with life north of the border – but those attitudes have been changing over the past few years.

Participation in the game is on the rise across Scotland, particularly at community level, with an increase in those enjoying the sport’s new formats and innovative programmes.

With summer around the corner, and cricket clubs expecting to be able to play their seasons as normal, the opportunity is there in Midlothian to take up the game.

Penicuik Cricket Club have a history which no rugby or football side in the area can touch.

Now heading into its 177th year in existence, Penicuik remains the only competitive cricket club in Midlothian and is keen for those in the area, who have maybe played the game in the past and are now lapsed, or who have recently taken an interest in it, to join up.

The club has two adult sides, which each play in the East of Scotland Division leagues, and also a developing youth structure.

A spokesman told the Advertiser that anyone wishing to become part of the historic club would be made welcome and could potentially play in some high quality matches.

He said: “The first XI are a high standard team pushing for promotion to the ESCA Championship.

"Our second XI plays in Division Six for less experienced players, especially from our thriving junior section, as well as players who play for fun.

"Newcomers are always welcome.”

The club is incredibly proud of its junior section which saw over 60 children regularly attend sessions last summer.

The under 10s play the softball game before those at under 12 and under 14 level play hardball throughout the season, which is usually held on weekday evenings.

“We also are one of few clubs with a fully female junior team as part of our ranks,” added the spokesman.

"We are also looking at the prospect of a new u16s hardball team due to increasing interest in the junior section.”

Penicuik CC boasts an excellent group of coaches who are led by Jack Hilton.
