Week 4 of the Edinburgh and Lothians Table Tennis League was a very quiet one for Penicuik Table Tennis Club.
With the 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams all having a free week, Penicuik’s teams in the lower divisions of the league
took centre stage.
In Division 3, the 4th team of Phil Daly, Kris Laszkiewicz and Neil Hayes faced a home tie against North Merchiston 3. After a slow start to the season, having picked up one point from a possible four, Penicuik knew that a win was
needed to move them away from the bottom half of the Division. Kris was the player of the night as he won all three of his singles matches and with Phil winning two, the match was thrillingly poised at 5-4 to the home team with only the doubles remaining. Kris and Phil joined forces and it looked like plain sailing after an 11-4 first end win.
However, the North Merchiston pairing then won the next two ends before Penicuik wrestled back the momentum in the fourth end. With the match on the line, Kris and Phil held their nerve for an 11-9 win in the deciding end to give the home team their first win of the season.
