Rugby: Murrayfield live it up with comprehensive away win

Murrayfield WANDERERS signalled their intent for the coming season when they thumped Livingston 72-8 at Almond Park in their RBS National One opener.

After 20 minutes, the visitors to West Lothian had already built up a 17-5 lead when one of the Livingston players was shown a red card for stamping.

The man advantage allowed Wanderers to find gaps in the hosts defence at ease, Chris Dove, Alex Cox, Arran Richards and Iain Harper scoring tries to put them out of sight at the break at 38-8 to the good.

Wanderers added a number of scores in the second 40 minutes, youngster Murray Johnstone saving the best to last with a fine solo try. James Wade also got himself on the score sheet in what is likely to be his last appearance for the club in a while as he is heading down south to work.

With the likes of Dan O’Connell and Alex Cox, who both have Premier One experience, performing well new Wanderers head coach Bruce Aitchison will be looking for his team to build on this win.

Next up this coming weekend is Edinburgh University and the students will go into that one having lost 23-10 at Musselburgh.

RHC Cougars edged out Linlithgow 26-20 at Barnton while, elsewhere in the division, Hawick YM won 16-12 at Langholm, Kilmarnock beat Ellon 27-7 and Dunfermline defeated Garnock 54-14.
