Travel chaos in the area near Turin caused the kick-off of the match in the Stadio Lamarmora to be delayed by an hour.

The hosts scored two early tries before Heriot’s, the reigning BT Premiership champions, settled down.

Winger John Rae and Scotland Sevens cap Struan Dewar were the men to cross the tryline while stand-off Alex Hagart slotted one conversion.

Italy Emerging scored two more tries though and went in at the break 22-12 up.

In the second half the home side were on top.

However, Heriot’s did score further tries through second-row Russell Nimmo, Hagart and Edinburgh Rugby hooker George Turner though.

Hagart converted all three to give Heriot’s some hope in the second leg.

That second leg takes place at Goldenacre next Saturday afternoon.
