Russian sets vault record

YELENA ISINBAYEVA set a new pole vault world record of 5.01 metres at the XL Galan indoor meeting in Stockholm last night as she completely overshadowed Holly Bleasdale’s continued good start to 2012.

The double Olympic champion beat her own record of 5.00 metres from February 2009.

The Russian made her clearance at the second attempt on an evening where she dominated the competition in Sweden.

Bleasdale and Yarisley Silva were runners-up.

Bleasdale leapt to third on the all-time list last month when she cleared 4.87 metres, an effort bettered only by Isinbayeva and the USA’s Jennifer Suhr.
