Trump started in top gear with a break of 131 in the opening frame and won the next two. However, 22-year-old Donaldson, who had not previously been beyond the last 16 of a ranking event, pulled one back with a run of 75.

Trump made a break of 65 in the fifth frame to lead 4-1, but world No.77 Donaldson battled back, taking frame six with runs of 40 and 42 then making a superb 74 clearance to take the seventh.

However, Judd showed his class by making breaks of 82 and 60 to win the last two frames and pocket a place in the final against Stuart Bingham for the Ray Reardon Trophy and a top prize of £70,000, whilst Donaldson had to settle for a career biggest pay day of £20,000 and some valuable ranking points.

Donaldson said: “It took me about four frames to adjust to the atmosphere. I played alright but it was too little, too late in the end.

“It is nice to win a few games in one tournament. I can take a lot of encouragement from that, especially the comeback. It is a confidence booster for sure, and I know I can definitely play better.”
