Stew Mel rugby sign new trio

Stewart’s Melville have moved to strengthen their squad ahead of a season in rugby’s revamped National League with a triple signing.

Joining from Dumfries is goal-kicking centre/full back Tom Hiddleston while Edinburgh University pair Ben Manning (back row) and Rob Cuthbertson (wing) have come on board.

Coach Bruce Macnaughton says: “So far pre-season work has been extremely challenging as it is the first occasion I can remember having to cancel a session due to waterlogged pitches! But we have picked up a few players and a meeting with school-leavers indicated there could be as many as 27 recruits depending on acceptances being received for universities around the country.

“Donald Snodgrass, Kevin Brown, Mark Burgess and Duncan MacDonald will continue to assist coaching and we are hoping that SRU elite development hooker George Turner will turn out for us depending on commitments higher up.”

Stew/Mel have a testing
opener at home to Hawick when the leagues kick-off on August 25 and friendlies have been arranged against Murrayfield Wanderers, Dundee High and Haddington.
