Swimming: Michael Jamieson's Rio dream fading
Michael Jamieson, who trained with the City of Edinburgh before moving to Bath in 2008, had hoped that his return north to join the University of Edinburgh programme would propel him to a second Olympic Games in Rio this summer
But a sixth place in the 200m breaststroke at the Edinburgh International meet at the Commonwealth Pool suggests the London 2012 silver medallist will be struggling to earn a ticket to this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio. With the Team GB trials starting in Glasgow on April 12, he faces a race against time to make it on the plane to Rio.
But, while Jamieson has slipped backwards, Craig Benson appears to be on an upward curve. The former Warredner swimmer, now with University of Stirling, was second to England’s world champion Adam Peaty in the 100m breaststroke and was third in the 200m behind Greece’s Dimitrios Koulouris (2:12.00) and England’s Andrew Willis (2:12.79). Benson clocked 2:14.37. Jamieson touched in 2:16.13.
