A MIDLOTHIAN school’s outstanding success in developing pupil attainment through sport has been given national recognition.

Bob Foley, head of PE at Newbattle Community High School, was invited by the Scottish Government to attend a recent special reception at the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh.

“Celebrate Scottish Sporting Success” focused on the great achievements of competitors and those working in school and community sport.

Mr Foley was a finalist in the Sky Sports Living for Sport Teacher of the Year Awards at Wembley in January and his department scooped a Recognition Award at last month’s Youth Sport Trust Conference in Shropshire.

The school has earned plaudits for using the Sky Sports Living for Sport programme to raise pupils’ aspirations and inspire positive changes in young people outside the school.

First Minister Alex Salmond and Sports Minister Shona Robison MSP met the sporting achievers and praised their efforts as Scotland looks ahead to this year’s Olympic Games and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
