The form book favoured the visitors who came to Hawthornden having lost only the first game of the season while their hosts have experienced much more variable fortunes especially in recent weeks.
The opening 10 minutes of the match ran very much to that form as the Saints stormed away to an 11 point lead through two penalties slotted by Hiddleston and a try from half way as they turned over a Lasswade advance and slick handling put Yates over in the corner.
Sensing an easy victory, Dumfries continued to occupy the home 22 but the Hawthornden XV regained its defensive composure with full-back Blackwood being a particularly safe pair of hands.
Having weathered the opening storm, the hosts took more control. Approaching the half hour Hennessey broke through inside the 22 and forced over beside the posts for Brown to add the two.
Lasswade secured the restart. Clark hoisted a lofty clearance which landed on half-way between the back three defenders. Smith had an unimpeded route to the posts and snatched the lead at 14-11 – a score which carried to the interval.
