Dame Elizabeth, who was born in Falkirk, graduated from Edinburgh College of Art and designed the First Minister’s official Christmas card this year.

The Edinburgh Award was first launched in 2007 to pay a lasting tribute to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the city. Previous winners include JK Rowling and Sir Chris Hoy.

Lord Provost Donald Wilson said: “Dame Elizabeth has enriched the lives of Edinburgh’s citizens and those of countless visitors to this city and is a deserved winner of one of our most prestigious civic awards.”
