The 17 paintings by SJ Peploe, FCB Cadell, Leslie Hunter and JD Fergusson went under the hammer at Lyon & Turnbull. The highlight was Cadell’s oil painting of Still Life and Roses which sold for £434,500, far more than its £200,000-£300,000 estimate.

The 15 x 18in artwork, completed in the early 1920s, shows pink roses in a blue jug by a jade bowl, set against the lilac ground of his studio in Ainslie Place, in the New Town.

Many of the paintings came from the private collection of Walter Quarry Wood, who was president of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
