Midlothian house prices are being significantly affected by the impact of sales to Edinburgh buyers, it has been revealed.

According to guidance issued by SESplan, the strategic planning authority, 32 per cent of all sales from 2004-12 were to purchasers from the capital.

Another significant factor is the future opening of the Borders Rail link.

According to Midlothian Council’s economic development cabinet member Jim Bryant (SNP), housing developers regard the new rail line as “a major asset” and that “this is reflected in the degree of developer interest being shown in the eastern part of the county”.

The housing land requirement for Midlothian is for 8,080 houses in the period 2009-19 and 4,410 houses in the period 2019-24.
