Edinburgh’s courts dished out sentences last month for crimes including serious assault, sexual abuse, damaging property and drug smuggling.
Pop star Finley Quaye was given a 12 month supervision order for smashing up his former partner’s Edinburgh cafe, and former Hibs striker Colin Nish was found guilty of headbutting his partner at their home and fined £500. A retired fire chief who downloaded indecent images of children was also placed on a six-month supervision order
9. Two men convicted of sexual abuse of children over four decades
Alexander Philip, 57, (pictured) and Craig Hodgkins, 52, appeared at the High Court in Edinburgh on Tuesday, September 19, where they were found guilty of sexual offences against five young people aged between six and 13. The abuse took place between 1978 and 2008. The conviction followed a Police Scotland investigation after survivors came forward. Following significant inquiry, the pair were arrested and charged in connection with the crimes, which took place in Edinburgh, Hamilton and Airdrie. The pair will be sentenced at a later date. 10. Man sent vulnerable teenager sexual messages
Daryl Munro from Edinburgh made contact with a child when they were just 14 years old and began sending sexual messages and voice notes to them over the internet. Munro, 21, also sent the victim an image of his penis during the indecent online contact that took place over a 12 month period. On September 19, Sheriff Wendy Sheehan ordered Munro to take part in the CISSO sex offenders rehabilitation programme and banned him from having any contact with children under the age of 18. Munro, of Shandwick Place, Edinburgh, was also placed on a social work supervision order and on the Sex Offenders Register for three years as a direct alternative to custody. Photo: Alexander Lawrie
11. Footballer facing jail after drug haul discovered
Craig Ferrier was found to have the huge haul of cocaine and heroin stashed in a small hatch in his bathroom when police raided his home earlier this year. Ferrier, who plays for Edinburgh United, was also linked to a second drug find after police officers discovered his DNA on a bag containing heroin found inside a suspected stolen car. He pleaded guilty to two drug offences when he appeared from custody at Edinburgh Sheriff Court in August. He returned for sentencing on September 7. But when the case was called, Sheriff Kenneth McGowan was told the social work reports previously called for had not been prepared and he agreed to defer sentence further to October.
